Storms River Village and the surrounding areas have a wide variety of activities and attractions, with many nature trails.

Woodcutters Journey

Storms River Adventures offers a 3 hour slow drive tour to explore the old storms River Pass from their base in Stromsriver Village.  The journey takes visitors down the pass through Plaatbos, situated in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park, to the low water bridge over the Storms River.  Visitors can learn about the fauna and flora of the forest and the history of the pass from guides whilst relaxing and savoring a delicious two course meal under the trees at the picnic site. This activity is suitable for the whole family – no strenuous walking, just beautiful scenery, fantastic knowledge and good food.

Big Tree, Tsitsikamma

The Big tree can be found on the Ratel walk. The tree is a Yellowwood giant, estimated to be approximately 1000 years old; it is 36.6 meters high and nine meters in circumference. It will take you around 10 minutes (on 500m wooden boardwalk) to walk to the big tree from the entrance.

Bloukrans Bungee jumping

Perfect for adrenalin junkies in search of the ultimate rush.  Visitors can leap off the 216 metre Bloukrans river bridge (world’s highest bungee jump facility). This Bloukrans River also forms the border between Eastern and Western Cape.

Black Water Tubing

This unique water adventure offered by the Tube ‘n Axe Backpackers is a fun way to explore the exquisite scenes of the Tsitsikamma. The excursion on one-man inflatable tubes, takes place on the Storms River in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park. This river adventure is one of fun-filled hours of paddling, swimming and optional rock and tube jumps up to 8m high.

Segway Tours

1 & 2 hour Forest Tours

This is a great way of seeing the areas of the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park surrounding Storms River Village.  One will experience the breath-taking beauty of the forest up close from the comfort of your Segway. Visitors have a choice of 1 or 2 hour Segway tours that include the forests around Stormsriver Village and/or the Big Tree (a majestic 1000 year old yellowwood). A 20 minute training experience is part of your 1 or 2 hr tour. The 2 hr tour is subject to availability. Drinking water and rain jackets are provided. 

Treetop Canopy Tour

Storms River Adventures offers a 3 hour zip line activity to experience the forest from 30 meters up among the tree tops.  Situated near Stormsriver Village in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, the platforms connected by a series of zip lines, provide unbelievable views of this enchanting forest world. Well trained guides will see to your safety and explain the ecology of the forest – pointing out different trees and magnificent giant ferns way below. 

Johan Brink & Friends Art Gallery

The gallery features predominantly work from owner-artist Johan Brink as well as that of other local artists in a variety of mediums, water colour, acrylic, oil, photography and ceramics.  Art courses are offered in a comfortable air-conditioned loft studio with a full range of equipment and materials.

Forest Ferns

Nestled in the majestic surrounding of the Tsitsikamma Forest, the Fernery at the Forest Ferns Estate awaits your arrival. 

Guided by our qualified horticulturalist, this interperative and informative garden tour is 1 hour and it will open up the magic world of plant diversity and the ecology that makes The Fernery such a unique natural environment.

Bird Watching

Along the coastline you can find Cape and White-breasted cormorants, Kelp Gulls, African Black Oystercatchers, Cape Gannet, Pied and Giant Kingfishers, Half-collared Kingfisher and African Finfoot. Along the forest edges you may find a Chorister Robin-chat, Knysna Turaco (Lourie) and White-necked Raven. The forest also hosts the African Crowned Eagle, African Wood Owl, African Goshawk and Black Sparrowhawk. In the mountains you are likely to find the Cape Canary, Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Black Saw-wing, Ground Woodpecker, Protea Canary, Victorin’s Warbler, Striped Flufftail and Cape Siskin.

Goesa Nature Walk

2 kms | 1 hour

The walk starts and ends at the SANParks Office in Storms River Village. For most of the way this short walk winds through indigenous forests down to a stream and back up. As you enter the forest you will encounter some Hard Pear trees and at the stream you can see some beautiful Tree Ferns.  The walk is relatively easy with wooden boardwalk, bridges and steps in places.

Plaatbos Forest Trails

2 – 4 hours: Yellow (8.09km), Red (7.78km) and Green (5.09km)

This network of trails traverse indigenous forests classified as wet, medium moist and dry High Forest. Four routes have been laid out and been color-coded with yellow (8.09km), red (7.78km) and green (5.09km) footprints giving a choice of walking distances. On the yellow route visitors can have a picnic and swim in the Storm River at the Old Bridge picnic site. The walks are relatively easy and an average of 3km/h can indicate the time needed to complete the various routes.

Stormsriver Fynbos Trail

2.2 kms | 1 hour

The Fynbos Trail starts at the parking area next to the Armargh Country Lodge and Spa.  The trail has two loops to provide visitors with a choice of distance.  Maps are available at the Stormsriver Tourist Information Centre at the entrance to Stormsriver Village.

Tsitsikamma Big Tree

1 km | 1 hour

The Big tree is situated along the boardwalk that forms part of first loop of the Ratel trail.

Ratel Nature Walk

1 – 1 hours: Red (4.2km), Yellow (2.6km) and Green (1km)

This walk starts and ends at Tsitsikamma Big Tree on the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Humansdorp just north of the town of Storms River. The walks transverse forests classified as wet and medium moist High Forest. Three routes have been laid out and have been colour-coded with red (4.2km), yellow (2.6km) and green (1km) footprints giving a choice of walking distances. The walks are relatively easy and an average of 3km/h can indicate the time needed to complete the various walks. On the red walk, you will encounter a big Hard Pear tree and on the yellow walk, a big Yellowwood tree.

Tsitsikamma Overnight Trails

Dolphin Trail

This is a unique guided, luxury hiking experience. The 2 day trail on the spectacular Tsitsikamma coast has a luggage portage service.  Visitors spend each evening in the 4-5 star comfort of a different accommodation venue along the trail. The journey starts and ends at the Storms River Mouth Camp.

Tsitsikamma Overnight Trails

Otter Trail

It is undoubtedly one of the best known and most popular of the South African overnight hiking trails and amongst the best trails in the world. This 5 day trail offers some of the most spectacular vistas and landscapes along 42.5km of Tsitsikamma coastline, from the Storms River Mouth in the east to Nature’s Valley in the West. It traverses breathtakingly desolate coastline, wild river gorges and broken cliff faces with majestic waterfalls. 

Agulhas Lookout

Situated on the Lourie trail at the Storms River Mouth it is an excellent whale watching spot. 

Snorkelling & Scuba diving

Snorkelling and Scuba diving at Storms river mouth is offered by Untouched Adventures located inside the Storms river Mouth Rest Camp.  They also offer Kayaking & Lilo activities. 

Canoeing

Guided kayaking and lilo activities at Storms river mouth is offered by Untouched Adventures located at the boat house near the restaurant. They also offer guided scuba and snorkeling. 

Cycle Routes

A 26km cycle route can be enjoyed from Stormsriver Village to the viewpoint overlooking then Storms River Mouth.  The trail follows the old Storms River Pass through the Plaatbos Nature Reserve in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National park and is available free of charge to cyclist. 

Geocaching

Geocaching is a great way to add some extra adventure to an already exciting outing. There are around 200 caches in the greater Garden Route area waiting to be found!
